Black Same-Same Sex Households in the Los Angeles, California Metropolitan Area
The US Census counts 3,421 Black gay and lesbian couples in the Los Angeles area. This represents 4.1% of all Black same-sex couples in the U.S. Six percent of all same-sex households in the Los Angeles area are Black same-sex households (i.e. at least one partner is Black).
DEMOGRAPHICS
The average age of individuals in Black same-sex couples was 40.7.
Ninety percent of Black male same-sex partners and 93% of Black female same-sex partners were citizens.
Seventeen percent of men and ten percent of women in Black same-sex couples reported having a disability.
Eighty percent of men and 80% of women in Black same-sex couples reported that they spoke English at home.
Twelve percent of men and 12% of women in Black same-sex couples spoke Spanish, while the remainder spoke some other language.
Sixteen percent of partnered Black men and eight percent of partnered Black women in same-sex couples were born outside of the United States.
INCOME
The median household income for Black male same-sex couples was $59,300. The median household income for Black female same-sex couples was $59,300.
The median personal income for individuals in Black same-sex couples was $29,550.
FAMILY
Thirty-seven percent of Black female same-sex couples and 37% of Black male same-sex couples are raising children.
Twenty-three percent of Black female same-sex couples and 23% of Black male same-sex couples are raising biological children.
Fourteen percent of Black female same-sex couples and 14% of Black male same-sex couples are raising non-biological (fostered or adopted) children.
RESIDENCE
Black same-sex couples are more likely to live in the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 15th council districts in the City of Los Angeles.
In the County of Los Angeles, Black same-sex couples are more likely to reside in Inglewood, Compton, Ladera Heights, View Park, and Long Beach.
Forty-six percent of Black male same-sex couples and 39% of Black female same-sex couples report living in the same residence five years ago.
Forty-seven percent of Black male same-sex couples and 47% of Black female same-sex couples own their own home.
EMPLOYMENT
Sixty-six percent of Black men in same-sex households and 78% of Black women in same-sex households report working full-time.
Four percent of Black men in same-sex households and six percent of Black women in same-sex households work part-time.
Twenty-nine percent of men and 16% of women in Black same-sex couples reported not working.
Thirteen percent of Black men and 27% of Black women in same-sex households work in the public sector.
MILITARY SERVICE
Twenty-six percent of men and nine percent of women in Black same-sex couples are military veterans.
